Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to what diabetic and senior patients ask us most.

How does diabetes affect my eyes?
Diabetes can quietly damage the tiny blood vessels in the back of your eye — a condition called diabetic retinopathy — and it also raises your risk of cataracts and glaucoma. The hard part is there are often no symptoms until damage is done, which is why a yearly dilated exam matters so much.
Does Medicare cover diabetic eye exams?
Yes. If you have diabetes, Medicare Part B covers a yearly dilated eye exam to screen for diabetic eye disease. We accept Medicare and will confirm your coverage for you.
How often should I have my eyes checked if I'm diabetic?
At least once a year. Diabetes can affect your eyes with no early warning signs, so an annual dilated exam is the best way to catch changes early. If we find anything, Dr. Powers may recommend more frequent visits.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Your insurance card, a photo ID, a list of your current medications, your glasses or contacts, and any records from a previous eye doctor if you have them.
Will my eyes be dilated, and can I drive afterward?
A diabetic eye exam usually includes dilation, which can leave your vision blurry and light-sensitive for a few hours. We recommend bringing sunglasses and, if you tend to be sensitive, arranging for someone to drive you home.
Which insurance plans do you accept?
We accept Medicare, Medicaid, and most major plans — including Florida Blue/BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Humana, and more. We'll verify your specific plan for you; just ask when you call.
Are you accepting new patients?
Yes — all three offices (New Port Richey, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg) are welcoming new diabetic and senior patients. Request an appointment online or call (727) 738-5900.
